Homegrown cinema
La suite canadienne
In 1958, Suite canadienne, now considered the founding work of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, was broadcast on Radio-Canada during the concert hour. More than fifty years later, a troupe ventured to pay tribute to the work from a decolonial and introspective angle, questioning notions of national identity through dance. Olivier Godin immerses himself in the daily life of their rehearsals, integrating an element of hybridity between documentary and fiction by bringing Ludmilla Chiriaeff, the original choreographer of the Canadian Suite who died in 1996, back to life. Reality thus borrows from the fabricated capacities of cinema, underlining the playful, reflexive potential of art in all its forms.
