Geeky college student Arnie Cunningham falls in love with Christine, a dilapidated 1958 Plymouth Fury, and becomes obsessed with the idea of restoring this classic car to its former glory. As the car changes, so does Arnie, and his new-found self-confidence turns to arrogance behind the wheel of his new car, as his personality takes an increasingly dark turn. Adapted from a Stephen King novel, Carpenter’s Christine is an unsettling coming of age in which the anthropomorphism of a simple car manages to chill our blood. How do you kill what isn’t alive?
Presented in collaboration with the Fantasia International Film Festival to celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary.
