Le Décaméron

Pier Paolo Pasolini weaves a handful of Giovanni Boccaccio’s fourteenth-century moral tales into this picturesque melee. A young merchant helps thieves plunder a cardinal’s tomb, a woodcutter tries to get hired as a gardener in a community of nuns, an unfaithful wife tries to hide her lover’s presence from her husband, a libertine abuses an innocent monk…. One of Pasolini’s most popular films, The Decameron, transposed from Boccaccio’s Florence to Naples, is a scathing critique of the pietisms surrounding religion and sex.
