Quebec’s first feminist theater company, Théâtre des Cuisines, was founded in 1973. It was born of the desire to make it clear that private life is political, and that the world cannot be transformed without the words, eyes and actions of women. Their first play, Nous aurons les enfants que nous voulons (We’ll have the children we want), was performed on March 8, 1974 in front of 3,000 people in Montreal. Never before had a play been devoted to abortion in Quebec, a crime punishable by imprisonment at the time. Môman travaille pas, a trop d’ouvrage (Mommy’s too busy to work), now a classic of feminist theater, was launched the following year. An avant-garde play, it deals with invisible work. In 1980, As-tu vu? Les maisons s’emportent! (Look! Houses are flying away) dealt with the issue of mental workload, well ahead of its time. Through the four episodes of Nous sortirons de nos cuisines, Jenny Cartwright brings to life the history of the troupe and traces that of Quebec feminist activism.
