Gala Dynastie: Directors of the Year

In the spirit of celebrating and recognizing the talents of Quebec’s black communities, the Fondation Dynastie, in partnership with Cinéma Public, presents a unique evening devoted to the films of the five nominees in the “Director of the Year” category at the prestigious Gala Dynastie. This unique evening is an invitation to discover the rich cinematic voices of Manuel Mathieu, Laura Kamugisha, Nadia Louis-Desmarchais, Miryam Charles and Ayana O’shun through works that explore art, history and identity.
6:00 pm – Part one
Screening of four short films, followed by a round-table discussion with the filmmakers.
Tous les jours de mai
Miryam Charles | 2023 | 6 min | Creole, French. Following the shooting of a documentary on the death of her daughter, a mother reflects on her own life and especially on the passing of time.
Bird’s nest
Nadia Louis-Desmarchais | 2022 | 9 min | French. Lena receives the help of her big sister to make her frizzy hair as beautiful as her classmates’.
Les lavandières
Laura Kamugisha | 2023 | 4 min | French, Kinyarwanda. Lavande tells the story of Jeanne, her mother, a hopeful immigrant. Les Lavandières explores the birth, growth and sudden death of a dream.
Pendulum
Manuel Mathieu | 2023 | 11 min | no dialogue. A woman carries on her shoulders her most precious legacy: the liberation of her soul. This legacy sets in motion a spiritual choreography in which a group of men master their own freedom.
