Persepolis
In memory of Marjane Satrapi.
Tehran, 1978. Eight-year-old Marjane dreams of the future. Cherished by her modern, cultivated parents and close to her grandmother, she follows with excitement the events that bring down the Shah’s regime. With the establishment of the Islamic Republic begins the era of the revolutionary commissars, who monitor dress and behaviour. Marjane, now required to wear the veil, begins to picture herself as a revolutionary. Soon, the war against Iraq brings bombings and shortages. Internal repression grows harsher by the day. Her sharp tongue and rebellious stances become a problem. Her parents decide to send her to Austria to keep her safe.
