In Montreal in 1904, Giuseppe and Ninetta run a boarding house where they take in their Sicilian compatriots. One day, Giuseppe comes to the defence of one of his boarders and accidentally kills Théo, the son-in-law of his best French-Canadian friend. This tragedy exacerbates tensions between ethnic groups and changes the destiny of many.
