Cinéma Public is proud to partner with the Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM) to present some of the award-winning films from the festival’s 27th edition. The Undergrowth was awarded the New Visions Award.
On an arid plain in the Canary Islands, under the constant murmur of a volcano and the eternal breath of the wind, three sisters meet to unravel the fate of the family land on which they grew up. Filmmaker Macu Machín’s first feature immerses us in a suspended atmosphere, where bodies, silences, and the sounds of nature speak louder than words. Between harvesting almonds and tediously sorting through administrative paperwork, the sisters assess and observe each other, reevaluating the bonds marked by the weight of the past. Through careful framing, palpable patience, and a volcanic eruption of fascinating symbolic significance, The Undergrowth is an intimate, contemplative work that tenderly explores the rigidity of time and the way it influences the ties that bind us to our roots. Please note that the screenings on December 7 and 8 are Cinéma Public presentations, and that passports, accreditations and ticket books produced by the RIDM will not be accepted.
